World Blood Donor Day 2020 – Safe Blood Saves Lives
Every year on June 14th the world celebrates World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). This day is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of blood donations, as well as serve as a thank you to those who donate throughout the year.
Because of blood drive cancellations and blood bank closures due to COVID-19, the US has seen a severe blood shortage.[1] Much of today’s medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from healthy donors. In fact, about one in seven people entering a hospital need blood and around 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year.[2]
The World Health Organization states that blood and blood products are essential to care for:
- women with pregnancy and childbirth associated bleeding;
- patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of hemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions;
- people with traumatic injuries in emergencies, disasters and accidents; and
- patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures.
Volunteering to donate blood is a great way to celebrate World Blood Donor Day and can help save the lives of people of all ages, genders and backgrounds.
Once blood is donated, it must be kept safe. As a distributor of multiple blood and transfusion therapy products, MED Alliance Group understands the importance of safe and plentiful blood donations.
