Caring for fecal incontinent critically ill, bedridden patients can be challenging, time-intensive and costly.

Nine to 40% of all ICU patients are affected by fecal incontinence, causing nurses to spend approximately 174 minutes every day on fecal incontinence management.

When not properly managed, fecal incontinence can result in hospital-acquired conditions and infections (HAC-HAI) such as incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) and Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). HACs from fecal exposure increase length of stay and attribute to more than $1.34 billion in healthcare expenditure annually.

Conventional fecal management solutions have evolved over the years. Originally diapers and absorbent pads were used, then intrarectal balloon catheters (IBC) were invented to reduce cross-contamination and improve hygiene and clinical outcomes. Unfortunately, these solutions introduced additional complications.

When diapers and/or absorbent pads are used, patients are constantly exposed to fecal matter, which increases the risk of infections and patient discomfort. Staff spend a great deal of time and resources moving and cleaning patients as well as changing bed sheets.

Balloon catheters can also cause patient discomfort and have a high prevalence of peripheral leakage, requiring maintenance every few hours. IBCs are often over-inflated, either in error or to reduce leakage, leading to patient injury such as sphincter dysfunction and anal erosion.

Qoramatic is a fecal containment system that is comfortable for the patient and does not damage the anorectal region. With automated, intermittent suction and irrigation in tandem, the Qoramatic technology minimizes the risk of leakage and infections and reduces the daily nursing time for fecal incontinence management to approximately 6 minutes.
