FDA Grants Expanded Indication for Orchid Safety Release Valve
Orchid SRV Is Now Approved for Use With Blood or Blood Product Transfusions
Linear Health Sciences’ Orchid Safety Release Valve has received expanded FDA approval.
Linear Health Sciences has reached a major milestone: the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted an expanded indication for its Orchid Safety Release Valve (SRV). This approval now allows the device to be used during blood transfusions, a critical advancement for patient care and clinical efficiency.
The Orchid SRV is designed to prevent IV dislodgement, a costly issue affecting millions of patients annually. It is estimated that accidental dislodgement events cost more than $1.8 billion a year.¹ This cost can be minimized significantly if just a small percentage of IV dislodgements are reduced.
“It’s crucial to protect IV access during blood administration for critical patients, to ensure a stable and uninterrupted flow of blood products, which can be life-saving,” said Jon Bell, MSN, RN, VA-BC, CEN, emergency department & cardiopulmonary services director at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine. “Orchid SRV can be used to safeguard the patient’s line even during blood administration, and is an innovative and valuable lifeguard for those who are already in a fragile condition.”²
A Game-Changer for Reducing IV Dislodgement
The Orchid SRV from Linear Health Sciences is a tension-activated breakaway safety release valve designed to reduce the risk of IV catheter failure and replacement in patients two weeks of age and older.
This device is a sterile, single-patient use connector for needle-free access, placed between the existing IV extension set and general IV tubing connection intended to be used for delivery of fluid to and from the IV catheter.
The Orchid SRV can be used during direct injection, intermittent infusion, or continuous infusion, and now can be used during the transfusion of blood. When tension across the device exceeds a predetermined threshold, the device separates into two halves, activating valves that create sterile seals for the fluid pathway, to retain the IV site integrity.
