Prevent HACs/HAIs and CMS Penalties With the Qoramatic Fecal Management System

Are Healthcare-Acquired Conditions (HACs) and Infections (HAIs) Affecting Your Hospital’s Bottom Line?

Patients can develop a healthcare-acquired condition or infection in numerous ways during their hospital stay. Although hospitals put strategies in place to help prevent these occurrences, the Centers for Disease Control reports that one in 31 patients develop a HAI.

In addition to affecting patients’ length of stay, morbidity and mortality rates, HACs and HAIs can affect the hospital’s bottom line. U.S. hospitals spend between $28 – $45 billion each year to treat HAIs [1] and the hospitals that perform the worst are penalized further by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by withholding payments, making financial implications painful.

In 2021 hospitals lost an estimated $254 million in revenue due to CMS HAC penalties, with some of the top 25 hospitals losing $1.7 million each. [2]

    HACs/HAIs and Fecal Incontinence

Liquid stool incontinence affects 9 – 40% [3] of ICU patients. Improperly managed fecal incontinence can result in incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) and Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). HACs from fecal exposure contribute to more than $1.34 billion in healthcare expenditures annually.[4]

Hospitals that ensure providers are properly trained, are following protocols and have the right tools at their fingertips can help reduce such occurrences and the related ramifications.

Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs) from fecal exposure

The Right Tool for Fecal Incontinence Management to Prevent HACs and HAIs

The Qoramatic® Automated Stool Management Kit from Consure Medical is an intelligent, proactive fecal diversion system designed to reduce fecal leakage, nursing time, HACs and HAIs.

The Qoramatic features an easy-to-deploy, soft indwelling receptacle that exerts zero radial pressure and can’t be over-inflated to cause hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI). Unlike absorbent pads and balloon catheters, the Qoramatic uses negative suction pressure to proactively draw the stool away from the patient’s body. With automated, intermittent suction and irrigation in tandem, the Qoramatic diverts and collects fecal exudate in the disposable drainage bag, minimizing leakage, nursing time and the risk of clostridium difficile infection (CDI), incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), and other HAIs.

Learn more about how the Qoramatic from Consure Medical improves quality metrics, saves nursing time and positively impacts the hospital’s bottom line.
