Every year on June 14th, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The public health holiday, established by the World Health Organization (WHO), serves as both a thank you to those who donate blood and to raise awareness about the continuous need for blood donation around the globe.
The need for blood and blood products is universal, but unfortunately access to safe blood and blood products varies greatly across and within countries.[1] Much of today’s medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from healthy donors. In fact, about one in seven people entering a hospital need blood and around 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year.[2]
According to WHO, blood and blood products are essential to care for:
- Women with pregnancy and childbirth associated bleeding;
- Children with severe anemia due to malaria and malnutrition;
- Patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of hemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions;
- People with traumatic injuries in emergencies, disasters and accidents;
- Patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures.
